Alan Rapp is an editor, writer, and visual book developer. After fulfilling an MFA in Design Criticism at School of Visual Arts, Alan was managing editor of the temporary publication the New City Reader, whose office operated from the gallery floor of the New Museum in Fall 2010, and was US editor of DomusWeb International in 2011. He has lead graduate-level seminars in Design Writing at Pratt Institute and thesis development at Rhode Island School of Design.
His writing on architecture, photography, and design has appeared in numerous print and web publications, including the New City Reader, Dwell, Design Observer, Urban Omnibus and several books, including the Phaidon Archive of Graphic Design and Black Maps: American Landscape and the Apocalyptic Sublime by David Maisel.
A former senior editor at Chronicle Books, San Francisco, he acquired and developed dozens of titles in the art, architecture, design, and photography lists. He has worked with writers, architects, photographers, visual artists, and designers to develop books, limited editions, exhibitions, and other projects. Rapp reviews photography portfolios at numerous events across the country and leads photo book workshops in the Bay Area and New York. He also collaborates with organizations, artists, photographers and architects in creating books and packages and project-manages books and edits on a freelance basis. Since 2018, Rapp has been the Editorial Director of The Monacelli Press.
